02/26/09 Salon: "Immigration Law: Whose Right? Whose Security? Whose Justice?
Wyckoff Auditorium, Engineering Building

- Join us for a Salon focusing on immigration and law. This panel discussion will be comprised of panelists Won Kidane (SU School of Law), who will provide an overview of US immigration law and policy; Thomas Antkowiak (SU School of Law), who will speak on the rights of migrants in international law; Rebekah Fletcher (Children’s Attorney with Volunteer Advocates for Immigrant Justice, VAIJ) who will discuss detained immigrant minors in Washington, as well as federal agencies involved in custody and care; and Angélica Cházaro (Staff Attorney with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project) will discuss immigration enforcement, focusing on the overlap of immigration law and criminal law in the US. - This Salon will bring together disparate ideas and experiences around one common theme: how our healthcare system (its patients, its workers, and its public) are affected by immigration. Martha Goedert (College of Nursing) will speak on her work with immigrants living in Nebraska and how this work was affected by immigration laws and enforcement. A current student, Boundevy Ngov (College of Nursing) will speak about what it’s like to learn nursing from an immigrant point of view and how her views of the American healthcare system and what it means to be a nurse are affected by her experiences. The Xavier Global House Outreach (XGHOP) project provides undergraduates an opportunity to earn academic credit while learning about, and experiencing, the host of social, political, economic, and environmental issues that influence Mexico/U.S. immigration patterns in the Tijuana/San Diego region. Come listen to a panel of 2008 XGHOP participants as they present upon their academic, cross-cultural, and service-learning experiences.

The Justice Education Forum brings yet another evening of stimulating dialogue and community reflection over dinner with an address given by William R. O’Neill, S.J., Associate Professor of Social Ethics, Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. Fr. O’Neill's expertise sheds light on how Catholic Social Teaching offers a solid and informed foundation for immigration policy.
