Title:

Spirituality for the 21st Century

Description: The interest in spirituality among Americans has grown during the past decade, and Seattle University faculty are among the leaders in this field. In response to requests from our alumni, the Fall Seminar will introduce participants to the latest thinking about matters of spirituality and the Spirit. Patrick Kelly, S.J., who taught in an Alumni Seminar two years ago, will provide an overview and update on the importance of Jesuit spirituality for life in the modern world. He will discuss such topics as discernment, contemplative prayer for active people, the Spiritual Exercises, psychology and spirituality, and other issues. He will be followed by faculty who teach contemporary spirituality for the Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry. They will bring us up to date on theological and spiritual writing on issues such as gender differences in the spiritual life, ecumenical spirituality, spirituality and ecology, eastern/western dialogue about spirituality, new methods of prayer, etc.

The Executive and Alumni Seminars are open to Seattle University alumni and other college graduates in the Seattle area who seek a high-quality learning experience, stimulating discussions of life's deeper questions, and the companionship of other active minds.

Taught by Arts and Sciences faculty and special guests, each quarter-long seminar examines a great theme or set of issues in human experience. Discussions center around assigned readings or films that take two to three hours per week to complete. Participants are encouraged to make connections between the course materials and real concerns encountered in their daily lives and work.

The seminars are designed to fit the schedules of busy professionals as well as those with leisure. Participants meet on six weekday evening per quarter (about twice per month) for 2 1/2 hours in a relaxed environment on campus. Refreshments are served. The quarterly registration fee is $375, this fee covers books, instruction, refreshments and parking.
