Step 2 - Plan for a meeting with your Advisor

Use the Registrar's notification as your signal to go and sign up for an advising appointment.

  • If you don't know who your advisor is: Log on to SU Online; on the Student menu under the category "Academic Profile", select"My Profile"
  • You can find his/her e-mail, phone number and location by looking in the online Faculty/Staff Directory.

Use your Student Profile form (included in your Advising/Educational planning portfolio) and drop it off for your advisor when you sign up for your appointment. You can find the freshman profile form here, the premajor profile form here, the business major's profile form here, and the transfer student profile form here

Review your Educational Planning Worksheet   The Educational Planning worksheet is included in your portfolio. The questions posed on the worksheet are intended to prompt reflection on the direction you want your educational planning to take. Answers to some of these questions may effect your planning from the outset. Other questions will require some research or additional experience to answer. Think of your educational plan as a long-term project that you work on over time. Return to these questions and update information periodically. It isn’t as important to know all the answers at this point as it is to be mindful of these important questions. Plan to share and discuss this information with your Advisor.

BEST PRACTICE: Think about what you want out of your advising experience.  Are you just planning to see your Advisor to get approval on the courses you plan to take from one quarter to the next?  Don't settle for this "checklist" approach to your educational planning.  Always plan with an eye to your goals- the ones you have already envisioned and the ones that are taking shape.
