Japan, Fuji-San in SpringGo the Distance
This summer, two ME students are studying abroad at Kogakuin University in Tokyo, Japan. ME students are also doing undergraduate research at NSF REU sites in Virginia Tech, Washington State University, and abroad in Germany. Besides companies like Boeing and Kenworth, our students enjoy diverse internship opportunities from wind-energy consulting in Seattle, WA (Global Energy Concepts), to designing toys in Los Angeles, CA (Mattel), to "imagineering" in Orlando, FL (Walt Disney).

E Tyler '07NSF-GRF Three Years in a Row
We congratulate Erika Tyler on her 2008 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRF). This is the 3rd consecutive NSF-GRF our students have won, along with Dan Strickland 2006 and John Ulmen 2007 (and proud we are of all of them). We are pleased that Seattle University mechanical engineering students are being recognized by this highly competitive award.

Seattle University's Winrobo team took 1st Place in 2008 ASME Student Design Competition in District D (covering 8 Western States and 4 Canadian Provinces & Territories). The "Dragon Fly," an autonomous window washing robot, designed by 4 mechanical engineering students bested fellow competitors in the ASME Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) held in Tacoma, Washington on March 28-29, 2008. The team will travel to Boston in November during IMECE08 to take on winners from other Districts. (Districts A-F: North America, G: Asia & Australia, H: Europe, I: Central & South America, and J: Middle East & Africa)

Algae for Energy
As a senior design project, students developed a photo-bioreactor that maximizes the growth rate of algae for use in biodiesel production (sponsored by Bioalgene).

M Reha '09 in the rear view mirror of Leonard G.Leonard G. won 1st Place
The 2008 ASME Human-Powered Vehicle entry, Leonard G. Hawkenheimer (the 5th generation Hawkenheimers), took 1st Place Overall and 1st Place in Design in the Utility Class competition in the ASME Human-Powered Vehicle Challenge West held at UNR in Reno, Nevada on April 18-20, 2008.
