Application Review Process and Timeline

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through the final deadline or until the cohort is filled. Applying by the priority deadline ensures consideration for space in the cohort and consideration for institutional aid scholarships. Please note that the cohort begins every fall quarter, but courses being in mid-August to better align with Seattle Public Schools.

  1. STEP 1

    Start The Process

    1. Research the Master in Teaching program to see if it’s right for you.
    2. Identify which Endorsement area you will be applying for.
      • A Teaching Certificate in Washington State requires a specific Endorsement. An Endorsement is the specific subject matter or content area listed on your teaching certificate.  
      • Seattle University offers an Elementary (K-5) Endorsement or Secondary Endorsement (6-12).  
        • An Elementary Endorsement requires general content knowledge.  
        • A Secondary Endorsement requires specific content knowledge in a particular subject (for example, Biology).  
      • Review the requirements for endorsements to decide what endorsement you are interested in pursuing. 
      • View the endorsement verification form and instructions here. The Master in Teaching program provides individualized endorsement advising for applicants. You can request an endorsement advising session by emailing teacheredendorsements@seattleu.edu
    3. Review Admissions Dates & Deadlines
      • After the priority application deadline, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through the final deadline, pending space in the program.
      • Applying by the priority deadline ensures consideration for space in the cohort and consideration for institutional aid scholarships.

  2. STEP 2

    Begin Your Application

    Once you start an application you will be able to save your progress and will not have to complete it all at once.

    The MIT application includes the following elements: 

    1. Completed Endorsement Verification Form
      • The endorsement verification form verifies that you have met, or plan to meet, the required content knowledge for your chosen endorsement. Please complete this form to the best of your ability. 
        • You don't have to finish all coursework before applying, but please outline your plan for completing requirements before the program begins on the endorsement verification form (e.g., taking courses at a community college prior to the program start).
    2. Autobiographical Statement (one-to-two-pages, double-spaced)
      • An autobiographical statement outlining: 
        • Your commitment to teaching, which should demonstrate a well thought out understanding of and decision to go into the teaching profession. 
        • Applicable experience with diverse and/or K-12 students.
        • Personal connection to the Teacher Education program and anti-racist, justice-oriented values outlined in the Teacher Education Program Competencies and Mission.  
    3. Résumé
      • Detailing work experience, academic background and educational experience, volunteer work and honors 
    4. Two College of Education Recommendation Forms 
      • Professional references who can speak to your potential as a future K-12 teacher and to your ability to work collaboratively with others, ideally in an educational or leadership capacity. 
      • Once you've started your application, you will add the email addresses of your recommenders and they will receive a link to the evaluation form. The form should only take them 15 minutes to fill out.   
        • These forms are what is required. However, we encourage your recommenders to submit a letter as well. 
    5. College of Education Self-Evaluation Form
      • In the application you will be asked to complete a self-evaluation of your skills and aptitudes as they pertain to graduate school. 
    6. Bachelor’s Degree
      • From an accredited college or university, conferred before the program starts. 
    7. Minimum of 3.00 GPA
      • From the most recent 90 graded quarter (60 semester) credits, including transfer credits and post-graduate work. 
      • Applicants with less than a 3.0 GPA may apply and may be considered for probationary admission if they submit a letter explaining the reason for their GPA and their plan to succeed academically in future graduate coursework.  This letter can be uploaded during the application process. 
    8. Official Transcripts 
      • Submit official transcripts for any education listed on your application, including where your degree was earned to the Office of Graduate Admissions. 
        • Transcripts must note your degree conferral if you have completed your degree.
        • SU will assume responsibility for an evaluation of your required academic records for applicants who completed coursework outside of the United States. The evaluation is not an English translation of the academic records, but a separate document determining if the degree received outside the U.S. is equivalent to a U.S. degree and a GPA is calculated.
      • Transcripts may be mailed or submitted electronically to grad-application@seattleu.edu.
      • Applicants may be accepted to the program with unofficial transcripts. Once accepted to the program, students will need to submit official transcripts within their first quarter of enrollment.

  3. STEP 3

    Finish Your Application

    1. Submit your application and completed Endorsement Verification Form
      • Make sure you hit “Submit” on your application. 
      • Submitted applications are only considered complete once all application materials have been received, including your recommendation forms. 
    2. Interview  
      • Selected applicants will be invited to an interview as the final step in the admissions process. Interviews are an opportunity for you to demonstrate your clear commitment to ongoing learning as well as your ability to work collaboratively with others. 
      • Interviews consists of a group interview, individual interview and written responses.  
      • All interviews are hosted on Saturdays and are in-person or online.
      • If selected to participate in interviews, you will be notified within three weeks after the deadline.

      • You can login here to check the status of your application anytime.
    2. Monitor your email 
      • Make sure to regularly check the email you listed on your application for updates, including your admission decision.
      • Applicants should review the application timeline for information on when to expect an admission decision.
