Practicum and Capstone

Learn more about the Practicum and Capstone experience in the MNPL program.

Practicum

Overview

The Seattle University Master of Nonprofit Leadership (MNPL) program offers a practicum for graduate students during their second year of studies, designed to support nonprofit organizations in key areas of leadership and management. This practicum provides an opportunity for students to assess current strategies and make recommendations, while also allowing them to apply their education and hone their ability to facilitate change, gain greater clarity about their professional interests and goals, and add to their portfolio.

Each fall, we seek regional nonprofits interested in student support across various domains, including but not limited to board governance, finance and fundraising, communications and advocacy, and program and policy evaluations, with a focus on diversity and equity. Once matched, students work with organizations for 20-25 hours from December through March, under the supervision of faculty members. Students conduct assessments, analyze opportunities, and deliver implementation-ready recommendations to the organization.

Applications for the program will be available in June. For further details, please reach out to MNPL’s graduate program coordinator.

MNPL Capstone

The Capstone course is the integrative experience of the Master of Nonprofit Leadership (MNPL) program. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate and expand on the knowledge and skills they have gained over the course of the program. Unlike the Practicum, which is focused on change within a specific organization, the Capstone is focused on a broader issue or opportunity within the nonprofit sector.

In the Capstone, students work independently, with support from professors and peers, to continue the work they started in their Applied Research Methods class. They research and analyze an issue, develop appropriate strategies, and make final recommendations for improvement. At the end of the quarter, students submit a written report and present their findings and recommendations to a public audience.

Upon successful completion of the Capstone course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and develop a study of a relevant, timely issue in the nonprofit sector.
  • Gather and analyze credible data to gain further insight into this issue.
  • Develop actionable recommendations or tools to address the issue.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly and persuasively.

The Capstone course is an important part of the MNPL program. It allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to a real-world issue in the nonprofit sector. Students also have the opportunity to develop their research, writing, and communication skills.
