Prerequisite Courses for the APNI program

Find out more about the prerequisite courses required to apply for the Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion (APNI) to DNP program.

General Requirements for APNI Prerequisite Courses

  • A minimum grade of “C” (2.0) is required in each prerequisite. 
  • A minimum grade of 2.7 is required for Anatomy and Physiology I and II with lab.
  • All prerequisites must be completed before the program starts in the summer.
  • Applicants must have completed 5 out of the 8 prerequisite courses including the following two: Anatomy and Physiology I and Microbiology by December 31. You may be enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology II during Winter Quarter. Please note time-frame requirements for prerequisites. Unofficial transcript copies can be submitted at the time of application. If admitted, students have until the end of their first quarter of enrollment to provide official copies. Official transcripts are required for all prerequisite coursework to continue in the program.
  • There are limits to how long ago you took a prerequisite course and whether it will meet admissions requirements (see FAQs below for specific requirements). Prerequisite time limits apply to the application deadline and not the program start date.
  • The College of Nursing will accept online coursework taken through a regionally accredited institution.

Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab

Course Description: Atomic and molecular structure, oxidation-reduction reactions, mass relationships, periodic properties, acids, bases ionic reactions.

Introduction to Psychology

Course Description: General introduction to the field of psychology and the modes of natural and human scientific inquiry in psychology. Critical thinking about methods and psychology in the popular press are emphasized. Topics include the neuron and the brain, sensation, and perception, human and animal learning, thinking and memory, language and development, personality and social behavior, and mental illness and treatment.

Course Description: Study of life-span development from the earliest development forward, including infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, old age, and death and dying. The biological, cognitive, personality, social, emotional, and health aspects of development will be covered. Emphasis is on reflection of how developmental issues influence life experience, as well as a critical evaluation of research and theory within psychology. Students will learn to evaluate developmental themes in contexts such as service, community life, and parenting.

Course Description: Functions, graphing; linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic functions; systems of linear equations; inequalities; linear programming; applications to business.

Common Inferential Descriptive Statistics

Course Description: Descriptive statistics; probability distributions; hypothesis testing; College estimation; linear regression; applications to life sciences.

Common Questions about APNI Prerequisite Courses

Check below for answers to commonly asked questions about APNI prerequisites.

Applicants must complete or be in process fall quarter of at least 5 of the 8 required prerequisite courses prior to the December 1 application deadline. Successful completion of the following three courses is mandatory, plus two additional prerequisites of your choice:

  1. Anatomy & Physiology I with lab
  2. Anatomy & Physiology II with lab
  3. Microbiology with lab
  4. XXX
  5. XXX

If you are in-progress with of these first 5 prerequisites, your coursework must be complete and unofficial transcript received by Graduate Admissions by December 31. For instance, a course taken during the Fall quarter that ends mid December is acceptable, as long as the official transcript is received by Graduate Admissions before the end of December. While Fall courses may satisfy prerequisites, your GPA for admission purposes will be calculated with the coursework completed at the time of application per the admission policy. 

We strongly recommend you complete any remaining prerequisites as soon as possible after applying to the program. If you are accepted, your acceptance will be provisional until you complete all prerequisites. You must complete ALL prerequisites before you can enroll in the program and before you start classes in the summer.
