Research co-authored by Finance Professors Bo Han and Ekaterina Emm talks about the opportunities and challenges faced by SPACs in tapping international markets
Albers Finance Department professors Bo Han and Ekaterina Emm recently co-authored a research paper on special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) with Monmouth University's Bochen Li.
Cross-Border Acquisitions: The Case of SPACs was featured in Columbia Law School's Blue Sky Blog on Corporations and the Capital Markets. The study had been published by the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal in June.
Study findings show that out of 537 US SPACs that completed mergers from 2003-2022, 133 acquired foreign targets, nearly one in four of these SPAC deals. The authors examine the opportunities and challenges presented by such a move and distinctions between deals involving domestic and foreign targets at different stages of the process.
Separately, Han's paper, Global Bonds Redux: An Emerging Market Perspective co-authored with Bonnie Buchanan of the University of Surrey, is a semi-finalist for the best paper award at the 2024 FMA (Financial Management Association) Annual Meeting.
