Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22) CEJS, in partnership with various Seattle University departments and student groups, encourages action and participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development, and climate solutions. Join us for the many events and initiatives organized during Earth Month 2024 at Seattle University.

Movie Night organized by Sustainable Student Action
When: April 9, 5:30 p.m.

Description: For Earth Month 2024, the environmental justice student club Sustainable Student Action (SSA) is organizing an educational series focused on the practices by the Coca Cola Company with three events (April 9, 16 and 23). To kick off their series, they invite all to join for the screening of Mark Thomas's documentary on Coca-Cola. "Mega-corporation-free" snacks and drinks will be served! Mission Day
When: April 11, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Where: Pigott Auditorium
Description: Join Seattle University for this year's Mission Day which will feature renowned speaker Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass. Kimmerer will help us recenter, reconnect and reclaim our sense of belonging as collaborators in building a more just and humane world. Register for the event here.
Red Talks: La Tierra, Home, Identity and Destiny - A Latina’s Perspective on Integral Ecology
When: April 16, 12:30 p.m.
Where: Pigott Auditorium
Description: Confronted with growing environmental threats, a better understanding of the critical connection between people and nature is key to informing effective decision making for the Common Good. Many contemporary philosophers and great thinkers have been saying for decades that humanity is arriving to the end of an era philosophically, ecologically, politically, psychologically, cosmologically, scientifically, and so forth. The complex issues we are facing require new perspectives and new ways of thinking. In this Red Talk, Professor Rodriguez offers her insights from her social location as a “border” theologian. Earth Month and Arbor Day Celebration in the gardens: Work Parties hosted by the SU Grounds team
When: April 16, 17 and 18. Two time slots available on each day: 10 a.m.–12 p.m. and 12–2 p.m.
Where: Wildlife Garden (garden behind ADMIN building)
Description: Calling all campus members: We welcome you to volunteer in work parties on SU campus to support the organically and pesticide-free maintained urban gardening efforts lead by the SU Grounds team. Grounds has planned a new planting design beneficial to pollinators that will beautify and create interest for the surroundings of the Wildlife garden and the Union Green. New plantings for 2024, including trees for Arbor Day (April 26), are planned for volunteers to work with Grounds during April, Earth Month. Want to come and help out? Please join us at any of the days/times listed above. Minimum requested volunteering time: two hours. Soda, School and Slime
When: April 16, 5 p.m.
Where: ADMIN 307
Description: This is the second event in an Earth Month series about the Coca Cola company, organized by the environmental justice student club Sustainable Student Action (SSA). In this event, SSA will be discussing how Coke exploits people and the environment. Come learn how child labor, violence, racism, and war profiteering are part of your favorite beverage company. THOUGHTFUL Event by Redhawk Dining: "Good For You - Good For The Planet" Menu

THOUGHT●FUL is designed to encourage and celebrate the power of joy through self-care, mindfulness, spreading positivity, and togetherness while also featuring a menu designed to lower our carbon impacts and provide functional benefits for our guests.

Maguire Lecture "Grounding in connection": reframing the Climate Crisis through relationship
When: April 18, 6–8:30 p.m.
Where: LeRoux Room (STCN 160)
Description: The annual Joseph A. Maguire, SJ Campus Ministry Lecture brings the community together to share a meal and conversation. The dinner is a venue to engage our students, alumni, faculty, staff and community partners in dialogue around current justice issues through the lens of faith. This year's lecture will feature Em Wright, M.A., of Seattle University School of Arts & Sciences, speaking on the topic: "Grounding in Connection: Reframing the Climate Crisis through Relationship." Pots, Plants and Paints
When: April 22, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Description: Join SEAC for an afternoon of creativity and come paint a ceramic pot to use or your favorite flowers or plants! All materials will be provided so that you can transform plain pots into vibrant and colorful works of art. RSVP here.
EARTH TALKS 2024 - A Lunch Event
When: Earth Day on April 22, 12 p.m.–1:45 p.m. (DOORS OPEN: 11:30 a.m. – LIGHT LUNCH SERVED)
Where: Pigott Auditorium (ZOOM available)
Description: Join us for the fifth edition of Earth Talks, Seattle University’s annual showcase of five-minute sustainability-focused presentations by students, staff, faculty and community partners. This year’s keynote speaker is Jessyn Farrell, Director of the Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) at the City of Seattle. The event’s theme is "Care for our Common Home."
All speakers will attend in person, but audience members can attend VIRTUALLY BY ZOOM. Zoom details will be provided closer to the event date on the Earth Talks website: www.earth-talks.org.
Plant Sale with ESW
When: April 23, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: STCN, first floor
Description: Come pick up a beautiful plant at the Student Center! Hosted by Engineers for a Sustainable World, our annual plant sale is back boasting a wide range of plants from a local nursery. Students will be able to purchase indoor plants on campus to raise money for sustainability projects led by ESW and increase student sustainability awareness at Seattle University. The Duwamish River: An Examination of Environmental Justice Issues in Seattle and the Changing Landscape of Climate Lawyering

Description: In celebration of Earth Day, join the Environmental Law Society (ELS) and the native American Law Student Association (NALSA) in conversation with Jamie Hearn (School of Law ' 22; Director of Environmental Law and Climate Policy at the Duwamish River Community Coalition) and other practitioners to discuss the current environmental justice issues surrounding the Duwamish River, challenges encountered in clean up efforts, and the changing landscape of climate lawyering in the context of the climate crisis. Description: This is the third event in an Earth Month series about the Coca Cola company, organized by the environmental justice student club Sustainable Student Action (SSA). For their final day, SSA invites you to learn about the history of Coca-Cola at Seattle University, our contracts, and what you as a student can do to support the fight for fair labor rights, environmental justice, and sustainable purchasing. ThreadHawk Thrift

Description: The Career Engagement Office is organizing a thrift store-style pop-up event in front of Pigott Pavilion where you can pick out and take home two to three items of business attire for FREE! We want you to feel confident and prepared for upcoming job fairs and interviews without breaking the bank on clothing.
Patch Perfect
When: April 26, 4–6 p.m.

Description: Join RHA and bring your clothing with holes, ripped seams, and worn fabric to restore them while chatting with your peers and contributing to sustainable fashion practices! Supplies provided. More information here.
Harvesting Opportunities: Cultivating U.S.-India Collaboration in Agriculture and Food

Description: RoundGlass India Center presents a timely panel featuring experts in higher education, food sciences, agricultural development, and food security as they explore the growing opportunities for collaboration between India and the US.
