SOCW-5850 : Medical Social Work

This course will explore the role of the social worker in healthcare settings that integrate psychosocial and physical care. Particular attention will be given to racial and ethnic minorities and other marginalized, oppressed populations and how social determinants of health, power, and culture impact their care. We will highlight social work's unique qualities within integrative healthcare and social workers' partnership on multidisciplinary teams. Students will explore issues surrounding healthcare policy and social work's role in advocating for those who are underrepresented and underserved. Ethical implications for social work practice will also be explored. Students will utilize ecological systems theory throughout the course to help provide a framework for practice. Students will have the opportunity to improve their interview and assessment skills through role play, case presentations, and practicing motivational interviewing skills. Discharge planning, crisis intervention, and case management will also be reviewed. Students will be given the opportunity to gain increased self-awareness through personal reflection, being observed and observing others, and the process of giving and receiving feedback.
