About this Course

This course provides an overview of drug addiction counseling using evidence ­based theories and assessments. Emphasis is placed on sociocultural diversity and culturally appropriate and anti-oppressive treatment considerations for historically marginalized and/or vulnerable populations. Course introduces students to American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria for addictions, theories of addiction treatment, stages of change in addiction counseling, chemical use and dependency assessment, and evidence-based treatment models and interviewing strategies such as motivational interviewing and engagement, Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), and harm reduction. Ethical considerations in addictions counseling as a clinical social worker is examined.
