About this Course

This course will survey one of the oldest and most dynamic regions of the world. Our focus will be on political, socio-economic, and cultural complexities and transformations in the Middle East from the late eighteenth century to the present. We will draw from a combination of primary and secondary sources to interrogate the ways in which revolution, religion, colonialism, the arts, war, nationalism, oil, gender roles, and other factors have effected change and helped to shape what it means to be modern in the Middle East. Cross-listed with HIST 3560.
