About this Course

This course provides an overview of the classification, pharmacological properties, and physiological effects of alcohol and other psychoactive drugs. Students will explore the biological, psychological, social and political contexts of drug classification system and drug policies as well as the impacts of alcohol and other drugs on individuals, families, and communities. Impact of drugs and drug policies on vulnerable populations will be emphasized. Topics of discussion will include the societal issues of the War on Drugs, harm reduction theories, and demographic aspects of drug use, abuse and addiction.
