Law: Jurisprudence | School of Law | LW
About this Course
The Application of Transitional Justice Principles to Addressing the Legacy of Slavery and Systemic Racism in the US This course will explore the applicability of the principles of transitional justice to efforts to address the legacy of slavery and systemic racism in the United States. We will first acquire a basic understanding of transitional justice, both in theory and in practice. We will then look at the history of systemic oppression, particularly racism, in the United States with the principles of transitional justice in mind. Finally, we will look at emerging efforts here in the United States to apply the principles of transitional justice to both past and current manifestations of systemic racism. These efforts are primarily taking place at the local and state level. This last part of the course will also include a collective brainstorming of what more can and should be done along the lines of what has already been done, to address the legacy of slavery and systemic racism. No prerequisites.
