Welcome to Earth Month 2025

Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22) CEJS, in partnership with various Seattle University departments and student groups, encourages action and participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development, and climate solutions. Join us for the many events and initiatives organized during Earth Month 2025 at Seattle University.

KXSU Earth Month E-Waste Drive 

When: All month of April 
Where: Drop-off box in Sinegal, outside of room 230 
Description: Do you have any old headphones, chargers, cables or other sorts of electronics laying around the house that you don’t use anymore? Then stop by the KXSU studio during the month of April in honor of Earth Month for our E-Waste drive! Only 17% of e-waste is properly recycled so do your part and donate to keep electronic waste out of our landfills. Our drop-off box will be located in Sinegal, outside of room 230 through April 30th

Ignatian Advocacy Madness: When Justice is the Champion

When: March 3 – April 25, 2025 
Where: Online 
Description: Ignatian Advocacy Madness has begun! This isn't just a competition; it's a call to action for the Seattle University campus community. Hosted by the Ignatian Solidarity Network, it's an opportunity for everyone to learn, pray, and act for just migration and environmental policies. 
If you're hosting events related to environmental justice or humane migration policy, SU wants to hear from you. Share your activities with Campus Ministry and the Center for Social Transformation and Leadership, and they’ll include them in their entries to highlight your impactful work. Conversations with Governor Ferguson: Rise of the Governors: Navigating Contrasts, Chaos, and the Constitution 

When: Thursday, April 3, 2025, 1:30 PM 
Where: Pigott Auditorium 
Description: Seattle University’s Department of Public Affairs and Nonprofit Leadership presents a discussion with WA State’s new governor, Gov. Bob Ferguson. Among other topics, Ferguson will talk about how states like Washington are managing a rapidly-changing relationship with the federal government. How to prepare for a summer of potential wildfires with a declining federal workforce? How to protect life-and-death medical research at our universities? How to keep our Northwest energy grid safe? How to prepare for tariffs that cause chaos for businesses and government?

Threadhawk Thrift & Kids Clothing Swap

Where: Student Center, 1st floor  
Description: Do you have professional clothing items you could donate for our students? Are you looking for gently used kids clothing or books? Join in this "all-in-one" event to support our students. This event is sponsored by Career Engagement, Wellness & Health Promotion and Parent & Family Engagement.

Description: Join RHA for their Mend and Make event for upcycling, junk journaling, and other sustainability focused crafts.

Day of Service to Celebrate Earth Day (organized by ELS) 

When: Friday, April 18, 2025, 10:00AM-12:00PM 
Where: Frink Park 
Description: FirstGen has coordinated with the Environmental Law Society (ELS) a Day of Service to celebrate Earth Day 2025. Volunteers will be assisting a forest restoration project in Frink Park by removing invasive species such as ivy, holly and laurel to support a planting event this coming winter. This event is a great opportunity to get out of the library, enjoy the scenery of one of Seattle's great parks and mingle with students and colleagues.

EARTH TALKS with Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal 

When: Earth Day, April 22, 11:30AM-1:30PM

  • 11:30AM: Doors open – Light appetizers
  • 12:00PM: Program starts. 5-minute “Earth Talks” by 7 SU faculty and students
  • 12:55PM: SU President Eduardo Peñalver
  • 1:00PM: Keynote Speaker - Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal
  • 1:30PM: Event concludes

Where: Student Center “Le Roux Room” (STCN #160)  
Description: “Earth Talks” is the annual Earth Day celebration event hosted by Seattle University filled with short and inspiring 5-min presentations focused on “Care for our Common Home”. Keynote speaker this year will be Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. Presentations will cover advocacy, artwork, performance, poems, poems, research, service projects, education abroad experiences, etc. related to environmental justice and sustainability.  Join us and support fellow students and faculty who will be presenting!

Twilight Garden Meditation Walk

When: Wednesday, April 23, 2025, 6:00P
Where: The walk will start at the Campion Tea Garden 
Description: Join the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement and SU’s gardeners for a walk through our gardens accompanied by simple sensory meditations. The walk celebrates Earth Day and the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’ with simple tools for deepening your connection with the Earth. After the walk, there will be time to gather for food and conversation. Cosponsored by CEIE, Facilities and Grounds and the Psychology Department.

Volunteer at Magnuson Park to commemorate Earth Day (organized by SU Jumpstart) 

When: Saturday, April 26, at 10:00AM-12:00PM 
Where: Meet at SU – Volunteer at Magnuson Park 
Description: This event is open to everyone, and Jumpstart is hoping to have a total of 10 volunteers join. Transportation will be provided along with snacks and refreshments.

Planetary Health: Solutions for Health Care - The Drs. Luth M. and Narciso P. Tenorio Endowed Scholar and Lectureship 

When: Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 4:00PM – 6:00PM

    Prior to the event program, enjoy a poster presentation featuring scholarly work by SU nursing faculty and students

Description: Seattle University College of Nursing and the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability welcome Elizabeth Schenk, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chief Environmental Stewardship Officer at Providence for a discussion on the environmental challenges health care professionals and organizations face using a planetary health lens, sharing effective solutions tested in one of the nation’s largest health systems. Health care has a long history of creative solutions, innovation, and commitment. Using these skills, health care has opportunities to be less polluting, less wasteful, and less consumptive while building resilience, committed to its principles of justice and service.
