SU SDG Launch

Since 2016, SU has joined 1000+ universities and colleges that use the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS). STARS facilitates the assessment of our campus’s sustainability performance and our contribution to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals through operations, programs, actions and policies.

Seattle University’s aspiration to lead on sustainability and environmental justice was reinforced by the “Reigniting Our Strategic Directions (2022-2027)” foundational goal to institutional participation in Pope Francis’ Seven-year Journey toward Integral Ecology through the Laudato Si' Action Platform, putting concrete action behind the goals outlined by the Pope in his 2015 Encyclical.

SU SDG Launch is one of such programs that supports our Laudato Si’ Action Platform.

LSAP All Goals Wheel

Our 4th Annual United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals training to our campus will be held in Fall 2024. This program educates students about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gives them the skills and training necessary to mobilize action. The program focuses on empowering both undergraduate and graduate students to be changemakers by educating them about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and giving them the skills and tools to mobilize around them. Once you complete this interactive program, students will receive a certificate and badge to add to their resume and professional development journey!

TIIPS4Wellbeing (The Integration of co-Innovation Platforms in Sustainability for Wellbeing Governance) is dedicated to fostering partnerships and bridging gaps between sectors to drive innovation and create a better future focused on the holistic well-being of all, specifically underserved communities, in our global and local contexts. Rooted in the Quintuple Helix Model, it demonstrates how collaboration across government, academia, industry, civil society, and the environment produces the most impactful solutions.

Mission: TIIPS4Wellbeing (The Integration of co-Innovation Platforms in Sustainability for Wellbeing Governance) is dedicated to fostering partnerships and bridging gaps between sectors to drive innovation and create a better future focused on the holistic well-being of all, specifically underserved communities, in our global and local contexts. Rooted in the Quintuple Helix Model, it demonstrates how collaboration across government, academia, industry, civil society, and the environment produces the most impactful solutions.

Building on the success of the 2024 TIIPS4 Wellbeing in Pécs, Hungary, we are excited to bring the same dynamic environment for global collaboration to the Seattle Convening. The October 2024 Convening saw notable partnerships between Seattle University, Farmer Frog, and the University of Pécs, with representation from diverse regions such as the China Confucius Center, the Marshall Islands, Australia, and the Netherlands. This global reach underscores the interconnectedness of our efforts and the potential for widespread impact. Experts from Pécs played a key role alongside online and in-person contributors, setting a high standard for our future events.

Building on this foundation, the 2025 TIIPS4Wellbeing Convening in Seattle aims to continue co-creating a global interface to manage and enhance collaborations across various sectors. This multi-sector collaboration platform is designed to establish an integrated and equitable governance structure that connects sectors globally, integrating innovation platforms for sustainable well-being. TIIPS4Wellbeing is bridging the gap between multiple sectors to focus on our global communities' holistic well-being (health, economics, education, and community).

Key Objectives:

  1. Bridge Silos: Break down barriers between sectors and disciplines, promoting the exchange of ideas and expertise.
  2. Advance Sustainability: Explore how co-innovation can drive sustainable solutions for environmental, social, and economic challenges.
  3. Enhance Wellbeing: Prioritize human flourishing, mental health, and quality of life as essential outcomes of our efforts.
  4. Govern with Purpose: Develop governance frameworks prioritizing wellbeing, equity, and long-term impact.

Outcome: The convening aims to transform ways of thinking, teaching, research, and learning to become more community-driven. This approach supports the concept of a "university without walls," driven by the sister city initiative for sustainable well-being. The sister city initiative, a program that fosters partnerships between cities worldwide, aims to promote peace and strengthen local communities through cultural, educational, and economic exchanges.

Quintuple Helix Model: The Quintuple Helix Model integrates five key subsystems in the context of community wellbeing, holistic health care, food security and sovereignty, climate sustainability, and education and economic advancement:

  • Education System: Universities and educational institutions, senior programs.
  • Economic System: Industries, public sector, NGOs, and businesses.
  • Natural Environment: Ecological context and sustainability.
  • Medium, Tech and AI, and Culture-Based: Civil society, including media and culture.
  • Political System: Government and policy-making bodies.

This model emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainable development, and enhanced innovation by leveraging the strengths of each sector.

Next Steps: The Seattle Convening is designed to take the next step in the development of the Pécs TIIPS4Wellbeing Convening and demonstrate the power of collaborative efforts. After the event, we will continue to foster the relationships and ideas that emerge, with the goal of implementing sustainable solutions. Centered on our Helix Think Tank model, the event will showcase best practices for multi-sector collaboration. The Helix Think Tank model is a unique approach that encourages participants to share their expertise and insights, fostering a collaborative environment. Participants will be encouraged to network through B2Match, fostering global connections to address holistic socio-ecological wellbeing as defined by the UN SDG Goals 2032.

Global Multi-sector Collaboration: This convening, led by Pécs, Hungary, and Seattle, WA, emphasizes global multi-sector collaboration. It brings together researchers, faculty, and community entrepreneurs from Brazil, Botswana, Ghana, Germany, and beyond. The University of Pécs and Seattle University are at the forefront of this initiative, uniting diverse perspectives to drive meaningful change.
