Biography

Expertise: Dr. Juquatta Brewer is Assistant Clinical Professor in Seattle University’s Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. As an instructor, intern supervisor, behavioral health clinician and case manager, Dr. Brewer’s expertise is in sexual wellness, community crisis counseling, group psychotherapy for sexual offenders, child and family psychotherapy, and gender therapy for trans clients.

Why I teach in the OCMHC program: “I teach because I genuinely care about the development and growth of each online student I encounter as they progress into caring and competent counselors. Walking with individuals on their journey while they strengthen their clinical thinking, develop cultural competence, and enhance their social awareness brings me satisfaction as it means the field and future clients will be in great hands.”

Publications and media: Dr. Brewer has published on a range of critical issues including racial trauma and emerging strategies; children’s need for competent counselors in sexuality; and building resilience in children and adolescents during Covid-19.

She has presented at national conferences on topics including the impact of Covid on familial units and addressing sexuality issues in counseling.

Student interest areas: Dr. Brewer particularly enjoys working with online students on research around sexual wellness, sexuality, and multiculturalism and developing diagnostic and assessment skills and comfort.

Education and Credentials: Dr. Brewer received her BA in Psychology from Oakland University in Michigan, her MS in Community Counseling from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky. Prior to Seattle University, Dr. Brewer taught online counseling courses at the College of William & Mary and at University of the Cumberlands.

Dr. Brewer is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia, a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor.
