CAPS provides case management services to students seeking referrals to psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and other mental health resources in the community. 

What is case management? 

Case management is a collaborative process between CAPS staff and a student. Case management provides an opportunity to assess, plan, coordinate, and evaluate the options and services required to meet a student's health and human service needs. It's characterized by advocacy, communication, and resource management, and it promotes quality and cost-effective interventions and outcomes. 

What is a case manager?

A case manager has a special skillset to answer your questions, discuss your support options, and help you identify and complete next steps. Ultimately a case manager can connect you to resources on or off-campus. At CAPS, all our staff are equipped to act as case managers and assist you with your referral needs. 

What assistance can a case manager provide? 

A case manager might help: 

  • Discuss different therapy or other resources you can access (on or off-campus)
  • Create a personalized list of therapist referrals based on your resources/preferences, and help you move forward with next steps in that process
  • Investigate your health insurance to determine your benefits/session costs
  • If you don't have health insurance, assist you in exploring low cost/no cost options that might be available  

How do I request case management and get a referral? 

Please visit our office during our Urgent Care hours to receive assistance with case management and referrals. The CAPS office offers Urgent Care during Summer quarter from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. , Mondays and Wednesdays. Additional hours return Fall quarter 2024.

What if I would like referrals, but I don't want to or am unavailable to come in-person for case management? 

No problem, we are still happy to help you with an off-campus referral. We will ask that you fill out a questionnaire to help our staff begin the process of locating appropriate resources. Our staff will review your responses and return referral recommendations to you. Email caps@seattleu.edu and request an off-campus referral to begin the process. 

Can I find off-campus counseling resources myself? 

Absolutely, though be advised that it can be challenging. To start, we recommend looking at our Referral Provider Directories and Lower Cost Referrals pages for some basic options. Additionally, some students have had success exploring local counseling providers listed in the Psychology Today directory, which can be found here.

What if I am looking for referrals for an ADHD Diagnosis? 

Though CAPS staff can offer counseling for ADHD concerns, our office does not offer ADHD Diagnosis services. If you are looking for ADHD Diagnosis referrals please utilize the Learning Disabilities of Washington directory to connect with providers of ADHD assessments, which can be found here.
