2023-2024 Academic Year Health Insurance Waiver

Domestic students are not required to provide proof of insurance coverage and do not need to complete a waiver. Most international students have a health insurance requirement. 

Insurance Requirements for Waiver 

International Students waiver requirements 

  • Be owned, headquartered, operated and filed in the United States. 
  • Be in compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA Compliant). 
  • Provide primary care services. 
  • Provide emergency care. 
  • Offer inpatient and outpatient mental-health benefits. 
  • Offer unlimited prescription benefits. 
  • Offer full coverage for all preexisting conditions. 
  • Plan deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness. 
  • Cover repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000 or more. 
  • Cover medical evacuation expenses of the international student to student's home country in the amount of $50,000 or more. 
  • If a copy of your insurance policy is requested, you must be able to provide a copy written in English showing benefit amounts in US dollars. 
  • If you are living on or near campus, your plan must provide access to care within Washington State 
  • If you are taking classes 100% online from within the United States, you may waive with a plan that does not provide access to care within Washington State 
  • If you are an International Student taking classes from your home country please complete the International Student Center online survey:  https://seattleux.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b4bW7lFjLc0DoJD 

The fall waiver is usually accessible by August. Your information will be added to the JCB site 2 weeks of registering for classes.  Subsequent terms, the waiver opens 1-2 months prior to the start of the winter and spring quarters. 

To access the waiver, go to the JCB Student Insurance Portal 

JCB Insurance Solutions is the broker contracted with Seattle University to manage the waivers. They are held to the same standard of protecting your personal information as Seattle University.

Select Seattle University, plan year, International student or Law student. Then click on Go. 

Click on My Account to log in and create an account if you do not have one already. You must use your Seattle University email when creating your account. This email along with your SU student ID number and date of birth are required to verify your identity.

Choose term  

You will need access to your insurance information as well as be able to upload a copy of the front and back of your insurance card. 

If you accidentally enter the wrong information, you can resubmit your corrected information as many times as needed prior to the waiver deadline.  

Waivers only need to be completed once each academic year. If you have an approved waiver, you will not need to submit another one until the next academic year.  

If you have an approved waiver, the premium will be removed from your student account and no further premiums added for subsequent terms during the academic year. It can take two weeks for the premium to be removed once you have an approved waiver. 

For international students beginning their studies in Fall 2023, health insurance fees will be automatically added to your SUOnline account for the 2023-2024 academic year. Coverage will begin September 1, 2023 and end August 31, 2024.  

If you would like to use your own health insurance plan and waive the Seattle University health insurance coverage, you must fill out the JCB waiver. To waive, please follow these instructions:

  • Enter school name "Seattle University" 
  • Select your plan year 2023-2024 
  • Select 'international student' under "What Type of Student Are You?" dropdown & click "go" 
  • Click "Submit Waiver Here" and follow instructions 

After your waiver has been approved, you will not need to submit another waiver until next academic year. This waiver will be active through August 31, 2024.

If you miss the waiver deadline you may submit a waiver when it opens for the next term, however you will be responsible for the current terms premium. 

ALL international undergraduate students including those who are taking a part-time course load (< 12 credits) or have been granted the full-time equivalency (FTE) accommodation WILL BE enrolled in the Aetna Student health plan by default.
