President Eduardo Peñalver joins presidents from Fordham and Holy Cross in a discussion on the impacts of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action.
Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education recently interviewed three presidents of Jesuit universities and colleges—including Eduardo Peñalver—to discuss the aftermath of the June 29, 2023, U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action and its impacts on higher ed.
Here is an excerpt from President Peñalver:
Eduardo Peñalver on the power of diversity in higher education to shape society: “I think that there’s a broader impact of diversity that extends well beyond the elite schools: Universities are generally the most diverse residential communities in the United States. We’re profoundly segregated by class and race—until you get to college. And then the universities, because of their intentionality around this, have generated incredibly diverse residential communities where students are interacting in sometimes intense and certainly multi-stranded ways with people from really different backgrounds from their own.”
