Presented by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, author Robin DiAngelo, PhD, to speak on campus.
Exploring how a culture of niceness among white progressives prevents authentic racial progress, best-selling author and 1991 Seattle University alumna Robin DiAngelo, PhD, will speak on campus Thursday, March 9 at 4:30 p.m. in Pigott Auditorium.
The Office of Diversity & Inclusion is hosting Dr. DiAngelo as a prelude to the Racial Equity Summit on April 13.
Admission is free and registration is not required. The event is limited to Seattle University faculty, staff, students and alumni. The first 40 guests will receive a signed copy of Dr. DiAngelo’s book, Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm.
Dr. DiAngelo, whose work White Fragility shed light on the defensive reactions among white Americans when questioned or compelled to consider their own race, will be discussing issues raised in her second New York Times bestselling book, Nice Racism.
Although the focus is on white racial socialization, people of color may also find Dr. DiAngelo’s analysis valuable as it is rarely affirmed or provided in mainstream society.
An affiliate associate professor of education at the University of Washington, Dr. DiAngelo has also worked as a consultant, facilitator and corporate trainer. She was the SU valedictorian in 1991, graduating with a double major in history and sociology.
