Mechanical engineering (ME) is the broadest and most versatile of the engineering professions. It includes designing energy-efficient and clean infrastructure, medical devices, vehicles, robots and complex systems using machine design, materials, biomechanics, energy engineering, fluid mechanics, controls and more! 

The mechanical engineering undergraduate curriculum emphasizes a four-year integrated scientific, hands-on learning, and design experiences while increasing communication opportunities, mentoring by practicing engineers, encouraging both independent and collaborative learning, fostering an inclusive culture, and developing skills needed to function on multi-disciplinary teams in professional settings.

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Mechanical and Similarly Named Engineering Program Criteria.

Student Outcomes

At the time of graduation, students from our mechanical engineering program are expected to have:

    1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
    2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
    3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
    4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
    5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
    6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
    7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Student Enrollment and Graduation Data

The program enrolled 95 undergraduate students in Fall 2023 and awarded 29 degrees in academic year 2022-23.

You’ll have dedicated space with the tools, materials and technologies you need for your innovative engineering designs. Facilities include eleven instructional and research labs, a 3D printing lab, and the Machine Shop.

Integrated Design Projects

Immerse yourself in integrated design projects (IDP) every spring! The IDP teams are made of first, second, and third-year students who work under the guidance of an engineering faculty and in collaboration with volunteer engineers from local firms. The practicing engineers attend class sessions and consult with the design teams during project periods. This is “Engineering with Engineers” in action.

Mechanical engineers have numerous career options upon graduation, including product design and testing, systems operation, manufacturing, product management, research and development, and consulting. These broad job descriptions can be realized by working on projects related to pollution prevention and reduction, renewable energy production, engine design, testing the reliability and safety of products, developing advanced control systems and robots, and many more. Careers can also include the business side, with development, sales, management, and consulting.

Our graduates have fulfilling engineering careers, and many have become leaders in numerous technical firms, including Boeing, Microsoft, PACCAR, and Amazon.
