Event invitation: AI Regulation in Brazil by Juliana Sakai (Transparência Brasil)

The Technology Ethics Initiative would like to invite you for a talk by Juliana Sakai, executive director of Transparência Brasil, at Seattle University (Oct 25, 1:00-2:30 at Rolfe Room, ADAL Building).

The Brazilian Congress has been discussing different AI bills in recent years. Ranging from a principles-based approach to one inspired by the European Union model, the discussion reflects concerns regarding the role of regulation in safeguarding human rights while maintaining an adequate environment for technology development. This lecture will examine the evolution of this debate, the role of civil society, and the situation in Brazil, where no legal framework has yet been approved.

Juliana Sakai is the Executive Director of Transparência Brasil, an independent non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the efficiency and quality of public expenditures. She holds a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from the University of São Paulo and a Master's in Public Economics, Law, and Politics from Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Sakai has also held positions at Transparency International and the United Nations Development Programme in Timor-Leste. Additionally, she serves as an expert with the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence and is an Eisenhower Fellow.
