Joy S. Whitman received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from West Virginia University in 1997 and her MS degree in Human Relations and Counseling from Villanova University in 1991. She is Full Clinical Faculty in the Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Seattle University and is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina, a Qualified Supervisor in North Carolina, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri. She was Contributing Faculty at Walden University, Clinical Full Professor at Northwestern University in the Counseling Program, Core Faculty at Walden University in the Counselor Education and Supervision Program, Associate Professor at DePaul University in the Counseling Program, and Associate Professor at Purdue University in the Counseling Program. She has experience treating clients with a history of abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, career concerns, and an expertise with LGBTQ+ clients. Dr. Whitman served as President and Governing Council Representative in the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities. She also served the American Counseling Association as a member on the Ethics Committee (2003-2006) and as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling and the ADULTSPAN Journal. Her research focus is on LGBTQ+ counseling issues, specifically on training counselors to provide affirmative therapeutic treatment, and she has published and presented on these issues nationally and internationally.
